ArcHe-S, (Architectural Heritage Safeguarding), is a Tamil Nadu-based French NGO, founded in 2004 by the Architects Michel ADMENT and Bernard DRAGON. The objectives of ArcHe-S are to preserve and to promote the cultural and natural heritage of the Chettinad region.

To this aim the NGO has proposed in 2006, with the endorsement of UNESCO, together with the Chettinad Committee, a local NGO comprised of some leading Chettiars, the Chettinad region for the 2008 Watch List of 100 Most Endangered Sites of the of the World Monuments Fund. Chettinad was included into the 2008 Watch List in June 2007 bringing the first international attention to this lesser known region of India.

The safeguarding campaign, Revive Chettinad Heritage Campaign, launched in May 2007 by UNESCO and ArcHe-S at the occasion of the International Seminar on Heritage-based Development of Chettinad, aims at developing a long-term conservation and promotional plan of Chettinad heritage in support of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

The value of Chettinad is attested by the importance attached by UNESCO which has adopted the Revive Chettinad Heritage Programme under which many international technical missions have already taken place since 2007, with the support of the different District Collectors,  Mr M.A. SIDDIQUE, IAS, Mr Pankaj KUMAR BANSA, IAS and the Sub-Collector of Devokottai, Mr Darez AHMED, IAS.  At the request of DC SIDDIQUE, two reports, one on the Improvement for Public Space in the Heritage Town of Kanadukathan,  Oct 2007 and the other one on the Conservation Plan & Guiding Principles for the Restoration of the Alagappa Oorani in Kanadukathan, Feb. 2008, were prepared by ArcHe-S and submitted to the Department of Tourism, GoTN.

Several surveys and studies have been already conducted to analyze the architectural style, urban planning and landscape of the Chettinad region under the technical advice of ArcHe-S and by mobilizing students of School of Planning and Architecture of Anna University, Chennai,  as well as professors from Ecole de Chaillot, Paris (Postgraduate conservation school of architecture). During the two workshops in Kanadukathan. The Department of Landscape of Anna University has undertaken specific studies on water management system and the consequences of lack of its maintenance for the region.
